Social get together

El Puerto de Santa Maria is located in Andalucía (Andalusia in English) in the far south of Spain on the beautiful ‘Costa de la Luz’ coastline. The city is across the “bahia” from the historic city of Cádiz and around 1 hr 15 mins south of the beautiful city of Seville. As opposed to the generally better known Costa del Sol and Costa Brava, the Costa de la Luz (‘Coast of Light’) has not been ‘invaded’ by northern European immigrants and is in fact one of the favoured coastlines in Spain for SPANISH tourism, which takes the population of El Puerto from its winter max of around 100,000 to a summer one of over 300,000. It is very possible in El Puerto therefore to maximize the benefits of your learning and experience the authentic Spanish culture and lifestyle without the ‘infestation’ of English and German tourism.

Historic Puerto

El Puerto is a town rich in history and culture. According to the legend told in the Odyssey of Homer, after the Trojan War a Greek official named Menestheus escaped with his troops through the Straits of Gibraltar and reached the Guadalete River. They established themselves here and called that port Menestheus’s port. After the Phoenician and the Romans set base in El Puerto, for a few centuries the town was an important Moorish port named Alcanatif which means Port of Salt. Alfonso X of Castile conquered the city from the Moors and renamed it Santa María del Puerto. Christopher Columbus’ second expedition to the Americas set sail from El Puerto de Santa María. His pilot, Juan de la Cosa drew his world map (the first including the coast of the New World) in El Puerto in 1500.

Today El Puerto is renowned in Spain for its beaches, its gastronomy, its history and culture and is the home of famous Spanish poet Rafael Alberti. This area is also famous for the “corrida de torros” (running of the bulls), Flamenco and Sevillanas dancing inspired by the blends of colourful rhythms in gypsy and north African music. El Puerto, with nearby Jerez and Sanlucar, is also one of the three makers of Spain’s famous Sherry, with it being the home of the famous “Osborne” black billboard bull found alongside the roads throughout Spain.
